Why go

Why add a safari to your trip

After the mountains, the Terai feels like another country: flat, green and full of wildlife. Chitwan, Nepal’s first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its one-horned rhinos; Bardia in the far west offers the country’s best chances of seeing a wild tiger.

A safari is the easiest way to relax after a trek, and both parks are good for families.

  • One-horned rhino

Chitwan holds one of the largest populations in the world.

  • Bengal tiger

Bardia is the best place in Nepal to see one in the wild.

  • Canoe and jeep safaris

Paddle the Rapti or Karnali, drive through grassland and sal forest.

  • Tharu culture

Villages, food and dances of the Tharu people of the Terai.

Jungle Safari in Nepal: your questions

Will I see a tiger?

In Chitwan sightings are rare; in Bardia your chances are much better on a full day of walking or jeep safari — but never guaranteed.

Can I add a safari after a trek?

Yes. Chitwan is 5–6 hours from Kathmandu or Pokhara, so it fits easily at the end of an Annapurna or Langtang trek.
