Why go

Why trek in Langtang

Langtang offers big Himalayan scenery without a domestic flight: the trailhead at Syabrubesi is a day’s drive north of Kathmandu, so a full trek fits into a week. The valley climbs from dense forest — home to red pandas — into a wide glacial valley grazed by yaks and dominated by Langtang Lirung (7,227 m).

The 2015 earthquake hit Langtang hard. Villages have been rebuilt by their families, and trekking here directly supports their recovery.

  • No flights needed

Drive from Kathmandu in the morning, start walking the next day.

  • Glaciers at Kyanjin

Kyanjin Gompa sits under hanging glaciers, with Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri for panoramic views.

  • Forest and wildlife

Red panda, langur monkeys and Himalayan tahr in Langtang National Park.

  • Tamang culture and sacred lakes

Tamang villages with Tibetan roots, and the pilgrimage lakes of Gosaikunda.

Spring (Mar–May)

Rhododendrons in the forest and longer days. Afternoon cloud is common by May.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Stable weather and the clearest views of Langtang Lirung.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Possible with warm gear. Snow on Gosaikunda’s Lauribina La can make that section hard.

Monsoon (Jun–Aug)

Landslides can block the road to Syabrubesi; leeches in the forest.

Langtang treks compared

  • Langtang Valley Trek — 8 days from Kathmandu to Kyanjin Gompa and back, with a free day for Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri. The best short Himalayan trek without a flight.
  • Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda Trek — 14 days. Adds the sacred Gosaikunda lakes and walks out through Helambu to the edge of Kathmandu.

Getting there

The drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi takes 7–8 hours by jeep or local bus, via Trishuli and Dhunche. The road is narrow in places; we use experienced drivers and avoid the worst monsoon weeks.

Difficulty and altitude

The Langtang Valley trek is moderate: the highest overnight stop is Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m. The Gosaikunda extension is harder, with a 1,000 m climb to the lakes and the Lauribina La crossing at about 4,610 m.

Lodges

Teahouses are simple and friendly, run by Tamang families. Try the yak cheese at Kyanjin Gompa and the Tibetan bread at breakfast. Read more in Langtang Valley Trek: Nepal’s best-kept secret and the Langtang trek map.

The Langtang Valley trek is shorter and lower than Everest Base Camp, and has fewer steps than the Annapurna Sanctuary. It is a moderate trek suitable for fit first-timers.

How far is Langtang from Kathmandu?

About 120 km — a 7–8 hour drive to Syabrubesi. No flight is needed.

Can I see red pandas in Langtang?

Langtang National Park is one of the best places in Nepal for red pandas, mainly in the forests between Syabrubesi and Lama Hotel. Sightings are rare and need luck and quiet.
