Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Reopen After the October Flood

Updated 3 min read

Manaslu Circuit Trekking

The Manaslu Circuit (over the Larkya La) and the Tsum Valley trek are open again. In a trekking safety advisory dated 25 October 2026, the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) confirmed that both routes reopened after partial repairs to the roads, trails, bridges and teahouses damaged by the Budhi Gandaki flood of 11 October 2026. Restricted-area and conservation permits are being issued again.

In short: vehicles reach Machha Khola again, the Larkya La route is running all the way to Samagaun and Dharamsala, Tsum is open to Chhekampar and Mu Gompa, and permits are open. Trek with care and check local conditions as you go.

What TAAN’s advisory says

The Manaslu region

  • Trekking has resumed on both routes: the Manaslu Circuit via the Larkya La (Larke Pass) and the Tsum Valley.
  • Vehicles can drive as far as Machha Khola, where both treks begin.
  • A 10-minute alternative trail at Yaru Bagar now bypasses a difficult damaged section.
  • The Department of Immigration and the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) have confirmed that permits are open.
  • TAAN asks trekkers and support teams to walk cautiously and ask locals about the current state of the trail.

Manaslu Circuit (Larkya La)

The circuit has been back in full operation for several days. Trekkers have crossed the repaired sections from Machha Khola through Khorlabesi, Jagat, Philim and Nyak Phedi, and have already reached Samagaun and Dharamsala, the last stop before the pass.

Tsum Valley

Tsum reopened after community-led repairs. Local people installed four new wooden bridges and restored the trail in and around the Sardi Khola, reopening the route to Chhekampar and Mu Gompa.

The information was verified with Nima Lama, Chairperson of Chum Nubri Rural Municipality, and Serap Gurung, a local youth leader in Chum Nubri.

What this means if you are planning a trek

  • Autumn departures can go ahead. Late October and November are still prime season in Manaslu, with clear skies and stable weather before the Larkya La starts to see heavy snow in December.
  • Expect some rough sections. Repairs are partial. A few stretches use temporary bridges or new bypass trails, so walking times on the lower days may be a little longer than usual.
  • Keep a spare day. Road repairs can still slow the drive to Machha Khola. One buffer day at the end of your trip covers that.
  • Permits work as normal. We apply for the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, MCAP and (for Tsum) the Tsum Valley permit with a scan of your passport and visa. Solo trekkers can get these permits since March 2026, with a licensed guide. See trekking permits in Nepal.
  • Our guides check the route. Before each departure we confirm conditions with lodges and local contacts along the Budhi Gandaki, and adjust the itinerary if a section changes.

Treks in the region

  • Manaslu Circuit Trek — 12 days. Drive to Machha Khola, up the Budhi Gandaki to Samagaun and over the Larkya La (5,106 m).
  • Tsum Valley Trek — 14 days. A cultural trek to Chhekampar, Mu Gompa and Milarepa’s cave, with no high pass.
  • Manaslu region guide — seasons, permits, lodges and difficulty.
